How are they crafted?

Creating a fish, specifically in the context of additive manufacturing or layered fabrication is a fascinating blend of digital precision and material science. If we aren't talking about nature's way, we are talking about "growing" a fish through a controlled, layer-by-layer process.

Here is how these aquatic models are brought to life:

The Digital Blueprint

Before any physical object exists, a digital mesh is crafted using specialized design software. This file acts as a biological map, detailing every scale, fin curvature, and the exact volume of the body.

The Layered Synthesis

Instead of carving a fish out of a block of material (which creates waste), the process uses Material Extrusion or Vat Photopolymerization.

Post-Processing and Realism

Once the structural synthesis is complete, the fish often undergoes several finishing steps to move from a plastic model to a lifelike replica:

Curing: The model may be treated with UV light to ensure maximum structural integrity.
Support Removal: Any temporary scaffolds used to hold up overhanging fins are carefully clipped away.
Surface Refinement: The exterior is sanded or chemically smoothed to mimic the sleek, hydrodynamic skin of the real fish.
